GREEN INFERNO: CASTING THE CANNIBALS

How do you teach an Amazon tribe, who has no idea what a movie is to act like angry savage cannibals?

Thumbnail-Green-Inferno-Final-One-Sheet-27inch-x-40inch

Eli Roth’s solution: Make them watch Cannibal Holocaust.

TGI_CHILE_054_-_Ariel_Levy_Ignacia_Allamand_Pilot TGI_peru 035 - ariel levy, activists

From director Eli Roth, the horror mastermind behind some of the scariest movies of all time such as Cabin Fever and the blockbuster Hostel franchise, comes GREEN INFERNO, a terrifying new film about a group of college students who take their humanitarian protest to the Amazon jungle, only to be taken prisoner by the indigenous tribe they came to save.

Filmed entirely on location in Chile, the Peruvian Amazon and New York City, Green Inferno is Roth’s first feature film in six years and is the third installment of the horror-auteur’s “travel trilogy.”

In the horror genre, says Roth, “the scare is the star.” Rather than A-list names, a horror film requires “good actors, a good script and a director who understands how to shoot and edit it.”

For the central role of Justine, Roth cast Chilean-born model-turned-actress Lorenza Izzo (Aftershock,  Sex Ed, Hemlock Grove). Playing Justine’s roommate Kaycee is singer-songwriter Sky Ferreira. Other members of the ensemble include Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids), Kirby Bliss Blanton (Project X), Magda Apanowicz (“Caprica”) and newcomer Aaron Burns. Rounding out the cast are Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez and Ignacia Allamand.

But to really give Green Inferno that authentic feel of fear, Roth decided to cast the Callanayacu tribe from Peru as the main “stars” who provide the scares.

Nearly every person (besides the American crew) you will see in the movie is an actual member of the tribe that Roth discovered in the Amazon. While scouting a remote part of the treacherous Huallaga River, Roth saw a grass hut on the bank that looked exactly like the village he had pictured while writing The Green Inferno. As they pulled their boat to the shore, a few people cautiously came out of their houses to greet them. A remote, self-sustaining farm community with no electricity or running water, the Callanayacu has little contact with the outside world beyond the occasional supply boat.

While Roth had found the perfect cast, he also found a couple of problems—It wasn’t just that the villagers had zero acting experience, most of them also had no concept of what a movie was and had never seen one.

So to give them an idea of what they would be doing and imitating, Roth and crew brought a generator, a TV and perhaps the craziest choice to introduce the tribe to “the magical world of movies”—he made them watch the 1980 grindhouse film, Cannibal Holocaust.

“We had to explain to them conceptually what a movie was, and showed them Cannibal Holocaust—and they thought it was the funniest thing that they had ever seen—but we had to know whether they were down with it to let us in their village,” Roth said in an interview.

The filmmakers did their best to work around the jungle’s unpredictable weather conditions, which could fluctuate from clear blue skies to torrential downpours in a matter of minutes.  “I was petrified, mostly for the rest of the crew,” says Roth. “We knew it would be dangerous and there would be risks, but we were all in that boat on a rushing river filled with trees, branches and debris. The motorboats could only fight the current so much, and had to weave through uprooted trees and washed-away houses. We all just sat there in the boat, quietly gripping the metal seats, silently praying we’d make it back,” Roth recalled.

Despite the challenges, Roth says the decision to film in the Peruvian jungle paid off. “The footage looks so spectacular. It’s something you couldn’t get anywhere else in the world. We went farther than any cameras had ever gone before. They call the river gorge ‘Pongo de Aguirre’ because Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, The Wrath of God was the last film to shoot there. But we went deeper, to a point where there was nothing but river and jungle. It was an incredible experience.”

The perils of the river, to say nothing of the heat, stinging insects and other unfamiliar creatures, made The Green Inferno shoot a rite of passage for many of the young cast and crew members.  “No one made it out unscathed,” adds Roth, “All the actors were cut, bruised and bitten. They all signed up for an adventure, but were thrilled when we made it back to the city.”

GREEN INFERNO OPENS IN THEATERS ON SEPTEMBER 23 AND IS DISTRIBUTED BY SOLAR PICTURES.

Nothing But Real Chocolate :)

Delighting Filipinos with Nothing but Great Taste

A good combination of sugar, milk and cocoa to create Nothing but great taste Cocio. Last September 3, 2015 at Whitespace Manila was the launch of the Iconic Danish chocolate milk drink. Cocio is now set to delight Asia for the very first time, starting in the Philippines, with the launch of Cocio classic and the global launch of Cocio Dark.

The Cocio Dark, which is my fave among the two, (since I love dark chocolate ever – its healthier!) was first introduced here, we are ahead of Denmark BTW! My take on the classic is ofcourse lighter compare to the bitter-sweet taste of Dark Cocio, but I love the flavor! The sweetness is just right, just how I love my chocolate milk drink.

Here are some photos during the launch, the media had a taste of both, the classic and dark cocio. During the event they explained the contents of the drink, The history and future plans for the brand. I sincerely feel that the brand will be embraced here in the Philippines, Well Filipinos love sweets especially chocolate!

The event was lively, there was band that played, good food was served, they served red wine that goes with the entree of cheese!  I love the ambiance of the venue and they have great spots to take photos if you are going for a minimalist white backdrop. Honestly I arrived late but I was able to enjoy and meet people from the media 🙂

Cute story,  I was carrying a bunch of Cocio drinks, in the elevator of my friends’ condo I just got home from the event,  a kind citizen helped me out with pressing what floor I am going to because I have my hands full. And she noticed the drinks and I told her you’ll be seeing them soon in the market, so watch out 🙂 – I think its already available?

PH Launch of Cocio Marks the Brand’s First Launch in Asia

After winning over the hearts of Europeans worldwide, Iconic Danish chocolate milk drink Cocio is now set to delight Asia for the very first time, starting in the Philippines, with the launch of Cocio classic and the global launch of Cocio Dark.

 Jens Krog and Jun Cochanco
Jens Krog and Jun Cochanco

Models with Principals

Local Cocio distributor FlyAce, a company that endeavors to bring the best of the world closer to the Philippines, finds Cocio remarkable in that the brand embodies FlyAce’s commitment to great taste and responsible ethical production.

“I was impressed with Cocio’s meticulous processes when I visited their office in Copenhagen. Every step involved – from choosing ingredient suppliers to advertising the product – stayed true to their core values,” said Fly Ace President Jun Cochanco. “Cocio is undoubtedly the best chocolate drink in the market, and we think it’s about time we share it with the country.”

This marks the first time that Cocio classic will be sold in the Asia Pacific region, and the first time Cocio Dark, which features more cocoa in each bottle, is to be launched ever.

Unlike other brands, Cocio advertises nothing except its great taste. It does not believe in overly hyping or in doling out claim after claim of benefits a consumer can get. Cocio instead uses their trademark wit and dry humor to focus on letting consumers know they can only guarantee one thing: that each bottle contains Nothing but Great Taste.

Not only is Cocio known for their distinct approach to their beverage and their marketing, the brand is a staple in the lives of Danes. Commonly paired with hotdogs, Cocio’s versatility invites consumers to think up of even more Cocio pairings.

A Tradition of Great Taste, Preserved

Developed in the home kitchen of Danish couple Anker and Ella Pallesen in 1951, Cocio is the result of much trial and error over the course of 2-3 years. In the pursuit of the greatest chocolate drink, they discovered that they didn’t need much. What was important was the quality of the ingredients and the science behind the process.

The recipe they created uses only 3 ingredients: milk, cocoa, and a little sugar, all of which are sourced from premiere suppliers around the globe. The milk is from Arla Foods, the world’s largest multi-national dairy cooperative owned by over 14,000 farmers; the plain sugar is from established sugar suppliers; and the cocoa are UTZ-certified from West Africa.

The fact that the brand uses beans that are UTZ-certified means that they are supporting the farmers. It means that Cocio supports sustainable farming and better living conditions for the impoverished.

Free from preservatives, Cocio has no artificial taste. Cocio is the only chocolate drink free from stabilizers in the market. Bottling the beverage and cooking them for a specific amount of time gives Cocio that rich and silky smooth feel. This is where the ingredients mix together to create a unique flavor. To this day, Cocio still uses the same recipe from 1951 and still upholds the same ideals.

A European Staple Coming to Asia

Following the immense success of Cocio in their native Denmark, the brand was then introduced to their Scandinavian neighbors Sweden and Norway. In more recent years, Cocio has also branched out to other European countries, and to the USA. Cocio continues to make waves as the beverage of choice for anyone looking for a straightforward cocoa drink.

This year marks the time the brand finally reaches Asia, through the Philippine shores. “We know that Filipinos will love Cocio because not only is it delicious, it’s also made from natural ingredients, ingredients that are perfect for those trying to adapt a healthier more wholesome diet,” explains Jens Christian Krog, Senior General Manager of Arla Philippines.

“Cocio satisfies the sweet tooth without any additives or false promises. It’s the kind of beverage that Filipinos will surely love.” Krog ends.

8 Essential Design Tips for Working with a Small Space

The amount of micro condos available in the market today has new dwellers facing an age-old dilemma, something that takes just a bit of ingenuity and a splash of creativity to solve. Because we know that owning a tight space means having a tough time pulling off a unique design, we’ve compiled for you eight key points in giving your space the personality it needs, no matter how small it may be.

  1. Find the perfect fit
1 Illusion of Extra Space
Photo from official Instagram of Elle Decor

Space presents boundless opportunities, and planning it is the first step. Determining the use of each space allows homeowners to allocate the furnishings necessary. While it is important to know the right kind of furniture to put in your home, it is just as imperative to get the right measurements for it.

By knowing the exact floor space you’re working with, you can stylishly furnish your home without compromising space. That way, you don’t overload on home items that cramp up your space.

Photo from official Instagram of Elle Decor

“Décor that is well thought of can give your space personal style and the illusion of extra space.”

  1. Dare to have bold details

You don’t always have to use a wall or a room divider when trying to define an area, especially for homes with a limited amount of space. A large area rug or a bold floor design will usually do the trick. When placed on a specific section of the room, they give the illusion of division minus the hassle.

“A stark white area rug makes for a defined accent piece that doubles as a natural area divider.”

2 Bold Details
Photo from Carolina Interior Works website
  1. Go see black and white                                                                                                                                  Introduce contrasting elements into your space. Don’t be afraid to mix and match! Pair the old with the new, the light with the dark, or contrast soft with textures. This will add a harmonious balance that makes interiors look more spacious.                                                                                                                                                                           Photo by Christian Lucas Sangoyo

“Furnishing your new home doesn’t mean you can’t re-use old items, just make sure they keep to the overall theme of your home“

4. Stamp the ‘fun’ in functional

Make use of multi-purpose items or storage pieces to save up on space. This does not mean you have to sacrifice the look of the interiors by stacking up plain boxes for storage. Spice things up by choosing ones that have eye-catching colors or prints. Refurbishing old things and re-using them, whether for storage or display, amps up your room’s style while being economical.

3 Contrasting Elements
Photo from Smitten Studio Online website

“Keeping your storage neat and functional means you can also show off your items as accessories”

  1. Master the art of layering

Be it on tabletops or with pillows, layering can be done in every part of the home. Use items that vary in shapes, colors and sizes. Don’t worry about overlapping because this will avoid the space from looking empty, and can actually add dimension.

4 Accent Wall
Photo from NY Ceiling, Inc. website

“Numerous items don’t mean cluttered – just keep it clean and balanced.”

  1. Add a splash of color

Color will always be your friend – just as long as you don’t overdo it. Add accent pillows to your plain and neutral sofa to make it more interesting and to make your space vibrant and happy.

Photo from Things That Sparkle Blog website
Photo from Things That Sparkle Blog website

“Contrasting colors can provide a much needed pop of life in an otherwise subdued or monochromatic room”

  1. Take advantage of that wall

Think of blank walls as spaces that are just waiting to be brought to life. The best way to do this is by decking out one side with paint or accents to highlight a specific area while visual interest.

Photo from Agatha O House of Design website
Photo from Agatha O House of Design website

“Paint your wall a bold color or stencil on a unique pattern to make it a built-in accent.”

  1. Bring the outdoors in

Plants that flourish indoors are good for this. Not only do they bring life into your home, they also radiate tranquility and freshness. Get succulents as they are typically small, easy to maintain, and have beautiful varieties to choose from.

8 Island Tropical
Photo from Centsational Girl website

“Adding plants, especially green leafy ones, is an easy way to add light and life to your space”

If living in a small space makes you feel like you’ve gotten the short end of the real estate stick, just think outside the box. Think of your small home as space that’s bursting with design potential. A dose of creativity and imagination is all it takes to have it transformed into a covetable masterpiece.

The show is the brainchild of 2GO Travel Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Tagud and Marnie Manicad, Executive Producer and Director of Marnie Manicad Productions International (MMPI).

Mr. Tagud says “The idea came about when we wanted to feature different destinations in the Philippines, especially little-known locations easily overshadowed by Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu. It came up in a conversation with Director Marnie Manicad, and now, we’re finally launching tr!pinas.”

Ms. Manicad on the other hand says, “This show is a synergy of our strengths and expertise. Stephen being an expert on the travel industry, and myself on TV production.”

tr!pinas, a weekly travel show, will premier on September 5, Saturday, at 11am on GMA News TV. As the name suggests, each episode features a trip around the Philippines, with a specific focus on overlooked but equally beautiful locations, such as Cambugahay Falls in Siquijor, the setting of the pilot episode.

Joining Stephen on his adventures is Solenn Heussaff, the multi-faceted artist, model, fashion designer, and painter.

Both Stephen and Solenn, who are music lovers themselves, sang the theme song for tr!pinas.

Solenn says, “This was an opportunity not just to travel around the Philippines, but to show Filipinos and the rest of the world how much more beautiful this country is – it’s really the island of our dreams. And to sing the theme song alongside my co-host? What a treat!”

The show is brought to life by 2GO Travel in partnership with MMPI.

HOW DO I LOOK? ASIA ARRIVES ON DIVA TO FIX ASIA’S FASHION FAUX PAS

17 August 2015 – It’s time to go head over
heels for DIVA’s How Do I Look? Asia – the highly anticipated
Asian re-imagination of the hit fashion makeover series. Billed as “Asia’s ultimate fashion fix,” How Do I Look? Asia will make its debut on Monday, 31 August at 8PM
(SIN/MAL) on DIVA, NBCUniversal International Networks’ leading entertainment channel for women in
Asia.

The NBCUniversal International format,
produced by NBCUniversal’s Matchbox Asia, follows Malaysian celebrity
and style icon Sazzy Falak as she guides eight fashion victims to the path of
fashion enlightenment. Jeannie Mai, host of the original U.S. version, and a
familiar face to Asian viewers, features in each episode, setting up the
fashion challenges each week.

The fashion-challenged victims
include onesie-addict/ blogger Apple Allison of
Sole Searching Soul (Philippines); indie
rock guitarist Ariana (Malaysia); mismatch, mishap/ watercolor artist Choc
(Taiwan); sales executive, and literally
plain Jane
(Philippines/Australia); overachieving, yet outdated, Lavinya (Malaysia); rebel
teacher Lianni (Philippines); romantically-insecure Maisarah (Singapore); and
the uninspiringly-dressed motivational speaker Yessinta (Indonesia).

To achieve a professional look that can be
replicated for the everyday, Sazzy will be joined by a guest stylist in each
episode: Liz Uy (Filipina celebrity stylist); Zac Wu (Taiwanese celebrity
stylist); Andrea Wong (former editor of Elle Malaysia); and Anindita Saryuf
(fashion director of Elle Indonesia).

In each episode, Sazzy and an accomplice – a concerned family member, friend or colleague
– will help transform the
lucky fashion victim into a beacon of style.
After having their wardrobe raided, the individual will have their
current fashion choices face the “Eww Tube”, one of the iconic
features of the original format. The “Eww Tube” is a vacuum cleaner-like machine that
literally sucks offending outfits up and away after they have been eliminated
by the panel of fashion experts and accomplices.

The transformations featured on the series
transcend fashion and style. Viewers will also get to witness the complex and
emotional backstories of the victims, whose glamorous new looks, and freshly
developed sense of style, act as a catalyst for them to adopt a more positive
and confident outlook on life.

How Do I Look? Asia
is a testament to DIVA
s position as
the leading women
s
entertainment channel in Asia. We are confident that this ground-breaking local
production, like its original franchise, will strongly resonate with our core
female audiences across the region,
” said Christine Fellowes, Managing Director, Asia
Pacific, NBCUniversal International Networks. “Using the insights from various in-depth research
initiatives on Asian women that NBCUniversal has conducted and developed over
the recent years, How Do I Look? Asia features many of the elements that
we found women loved: fabulous and fun makeovers, the hottest fashion trends
tailored to Asian sensibilities, inspiring and heart-warming personal stories,
and a positive underlying message that encourages every woman to be her best
self.
