TypeKita, the newbie-friendly platform for Pinoy writers and readers

If there’s anything Filipinos love, it’s a good story—funny, drama-riddled, or romantic, we’re quick to sniff out a saga and follow it to its conclusion. Whether fact or fiction, there’s nothing quite like having oneself immersed in the twists and turns of finding out who said what, did what where, and who were they with?

Plots and characters have come to life on any number of platforms throughout the years, but one relatively recent emergence is quickly finding its legs: TypeKita is a newly launched app that aims to empower young Filipino storytellers by rewarding their creativity with accessible and self-determined monetization, while gifting readers with an interactive and visually stimulating reading experience. While the rest of the world criticizes Millennial and especially Gen Z readers for choosing shorter, digital formats, TypeKita promises to inspire and encourage the diversity already present in reading material available today.

At TypeKita’s official launch on August 16, Head of Growth Ysabel Yuzon, Vice President of Strategic Management Dana de la Vega, and Creator Manager Erich Valdevioso took questions from attending members of the press and detailed the ins and outs of the app, as well as its growing potential to “open doors even for those who may not have considered writing before,” according to Yuzon. Live readings of current TypeKita favorites Babalik Sa’yo (Rej Martinez), The Day I Said Goodbye (Miyuki Jeishi), and Hush Lucas (Arki Aaron) were then performed by rising stars Nour Hooshmand, Ian Pangilinan, and Benedix Ramos, bringing to life all the ups and downs of romance in fiction. Finally, singing champion and Silver Badger Featured Live Kumu Streamer Kathleen Anne wrapped up the program with some contemporary classic love songs, as well as her own single, Nagkulang.

The app is a localized version offrom the Thai original Joylada, and is further powered by homegrown social entertainment platform Kumu—a partnership that speaks to the growing online fiction community. “We have always been on the lookout for talent of all kinds, and TypeKita is the space we’re dedicating to the written word,” says Rexy Dorado, Kumu President and Co-founder. “We believe creative people always find their way to each other, but this is where we can also help people find the creativity within themselves, bolstered by a safe community. Both Kumu and TypeKita share a similar moderator system to keep things appropriate and any hate out of the picture.”

But that safety doesn’t mean stifled storytelling; if anything, the shorter bursts of creativity that TypeKita champions through the chat-fiction format effectively refashion the digital novel experience, making both

SM prepares PWDs, elderly for emergency preparedness

Disaster Management Specialist Doki Natividad teaches Joey Manzano, a member of the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) technique without using mouth-to-mouth breathing.

 Experts maintain taking the proper actions of duck, cover, and hold during an earthquake can save lives. For Mr. Ramon Apilado, a member of the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan it may not be as easy as it sounds.

It is one of the reasons SM Cares, a part of the SM Group, held its annual Emergency Preparedness Forum (EPF) at the SM Mall of Asia to ensure individuals like Mr. Apilado and other persons with disabilities (PWDs) together with senior citizens are informed of what to do in emergencies.

  Engr. Bien Mateo, Senior Vice President for Mall Operations and Program Director of SM Cares Disability Affairs, emphasized inclusion in the annual forum to equip vulnerable sectors of the PWD and elderly community with the ability to save themselves and the people they love.

In preparing for emergencies and calamities, SM Cares believes that no one should be left behind,” he said. “That is why we continue organizing this yearly Emergency Preparedness Forum. Our goal is to empower PWDs and senior citizens with the essential survival skills.”

Inclusive survival tips for the community

During the forum, attendees were encouraged to participate in several practice emergency scenarios led by Mr. Gerard ‘Doki’ Natividad, an instructor on disaster management and rescue-survival expert.

Consultations with the community were held to enhance inclusivity practices in an earthquake, including the duck, cover, and hold protocol. For wheelchair-bound individuals, it is better to lock, cover, and hold. This means locking the wheelchair brakes, covering the head with a bag or hand, then holding it for stability until the shaking stops.

The visually-impaired community is advised to hold their guide canes and stick to the walls since all of them lead to windows and doors.

For Mr. Natividad, disaster risk reduction practices must be inclusive.

“It should not be just a third party thinking for them,” he said. “Let’s ask what works or consult what is the most effective way for them.”

Mr. Apilado, of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, (TWH) a non-profit organization that uplifts the lives of PWDs, sees the importance of a consultative approach in emergency preparedness.

“Mas maganda talaga na may consultations,” he said. “Di naman iisa ang disability. Whether you’re blind, deaf, or you’re on a wheelchair, dapat lahat kasali para alam ang gagawin.”

(It’s much better that there are consultations. There are many kinds of disabilities. Everyone must be included in emergency preparedness whether you’re blind, deaf or you’re on a wheelchair.)

Committed to serving the community

 There are at least 1.44 million PWDs in the country according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). SM continues to promote a disability-inclusive environment through its programs, especially across its malls. With initiatives like annual sensitivity training, Angels Walk for autism awareness, and other special celebrations, SM has become one of the most PWD-friendly establishments in the Philippines.

To Ella Onnagan, President of the Valenzuela Persons with Disabilities Federation, inclusion encourages their members to be more active in events such as this.

“Bukod sa invitation na binibigay po nila sa amin, meron po silang proper at designated places for our community,” she said. “Ang SM, nagbibigay sila ng kasiyahan sa mga PWDs at seniors. Yung inclusion, nararamdaman namin na welcome kami sa SM.”

(Besides their invitation, SM gives proper and designated places for our community. SM provides happiness to us PWDs and seniors. We feel included—that we are always welcome in SM.)

SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation, Inc., launched the first of eight forums in July in celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month. This marks the seventh iteration of the forum. In terms of scope, it offers the biggest coverage launching in eight different locations to encourage more PWDs and seniors to take part in the initiative.

Subsequent locations include SM City Tuguegarao, SM City San Pablo, SM Center Lemery, SM City Consolacion, SM Center Ormoc, SM Lanang Premier, and SM City Bacolod.

Kultura: Social Enterprises as Partners in Green Living

In this rapidly changing world, it’s not enough to simply showcase attractive, trendy, and functional products.

Kultura is proud to be among those consciously promoting more sustainable, meaningfully-crafted and locally- sourced merchandise for green living. With a loyal following and many branches across the country, Kultura takes their mission to building a greener Philippines seriously.

Kultura President Ivy Yap expounds, “Retailers can influence customer purchasing decisions depending on our product offerings, pricing strategies and promotions—from product displays to discounts and loyalty programs. Using this influence for good, Kultura helps consumers adopt greener lifestyles by offering a wide selection of products that are made from natural materials that are biodegradable, upcycled or repurposed, aside from being locally sourced.”

Today, the Kultura store is stocked to the brim with Green Finds that make it easier for customers to lead a sustainable lifestyle.

Platform with a Purpose

Kultura, an SM Retail Affiliate, has been key to advocating Green Finds– products that are sustainably sourced and support local communities.

 SM through Kultura, has become a Platform for the growth of MSMEs. Millie Monday and Haspe are two Filipino retail brands that have been engaged with Kultura and grateful for how Kultura has been an effective incubator for their respective enterprises.

Mariel Ching of Millie Monday relates how this division of their Primex printing company was named after their mother, and how it specializes in merging art and print technology to create functional paper-related products and accessories for the home. “It was borne out of the pandemic as regular printing jobs vanished, and the family had to find ways to diversify our output, and keep our personnel and machines occupied.”

Today, Millie Monday has expanded its product lines, to include other non-paper products. Thanks to Kultura, Mariel was happy to report that bulk orders, and outright purchases from foreign countries like Singapore and Tokyo, have transpired. Their collaborations with established artists produce collections that are very well-received, and they credit Kultura for helping create awareness and goodwill for their brand.

  On the sustainability features of the Millie Monday brand, Mariel spoke about their sustainably sourced paper, and soy-based ink, as well as their Heidelberg offset machine, acquired with a proviso that involved planting trees in Africa. “We are the only Asian printer given the Green Leaf Award by Kodak in 2019. We don’t print on tarp, as it isn’t biodegradable.”

  Haspe is the Spanish/Filipino word for wood grain, and it’s a clue to the world of Baliwag, Bulacan native Arch. Eric Gonzales, who designs and creates the wonderful wood-based products and accessories that have caught the eye of shoppers that frequent CITEM, FAME and ArteFino fairs. “Our ‘sungka’, and chess board, made of mahogany wood and solihiya (rataan weaving), are among our signature products”.

  As Haspe has no Metro Manila showroom, Eric credits Kultura for being invaluable in terms of brand awareness. “We started off in 2016 with big traditional furniture pieces, and was inspired in 2019 to make use of the excess wood, and design smaller pieces.” He expanded to incorporate rattan, bone inlay, and other locally sourced materials. The wood he uses are sustainably farmed in Mindanao.

  Sustainability comes easy to Haspe as the products are a form of up-cycling, since the wood utilized to create these products come from ‘retasos’, or leftover materials, that would have been thrown away. Haspe’s products have become the pride of Baliwag, Bulacan.

  For both Millie Monday and Haspe, the sustainable aspects of how they operate their businesses are givens, as they acknowledge the need for being more responsible entrepreneurs.

While they’ve been involved with Kultura for less than a year, they both credit their engagement with Kultura as godsends, and are pleased to be placed under the umbrella of Green Finds.

Being sustainable and green conscious is a collective effort, from the manufacturers and the retailers, all the way to the consumers; and SM is happy to be driving the education, awareness and marketing of this new consciousness.

  “By educating customers about the importance of sustainability and providing easy access to mindfully-crafted merchandise, we aim to promote changes in our customers’ behaviors and move them to lead more eco-conscious lifestyles. We hope our efforts inspire other businesses and lead to the adoption of more eco-friendly practices in the retail industry, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future for the country,” says Yap.

Meet Casio’s “ace” EDIFICE addition with NISMO ace race car design features

pastedGraphic.png

ECB-2000NIS design employs graphic elements from the #23 Nissan Z, which competes in

Japan’s most prestigious motorsport race

 Casio Computer Co., Ltd. has recently announced the release of the latest addition to the EDIFICE line of timepieces based on the brand concept of “Speed and Intelligence.” The ECB-2000NIS or NISMO MY23 EDITION, which signifies “Model Year 2023,” is clad in graphics from the NISMO works team’s ace race car.

NISMO serves as a works team of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. which engages in motorsport activities. The EDIFICE line of high-performance timepieces, inspired by a motorsports worldview, has been a NISMO supporter since 2021. The two brands are natural allies as both share a passion for leveraging cutting-edge technology in pursuit of ultimate performance.

The new ECB-2000NIS is a high-performance chronograph that incorporates design elements from the body of the NISMO works team’s #23 Nissan Z race car which has been competing in Japan’s most prestigious motorsport race, the SUPER GT.

The new watch is based on the EDIFICE ECB-2000, which features a carbon fiber-reinforced resin case and a unique race car suspension-inspired design. Modeled after the color scheme of the race car as viewed from the side, the entire watch features a two-tone shift from red in the 12 o’clock direction to black in the 6 o’clock direction. A graphic pattern interlacing with the “Z” logo appearing on the car is incorporated into the dial design in the upper section. The number of the Nissan/NISMO ace race car, “23,” adorns the 23-minute position. A section of the bezel’s edge is tapered to create a sharp curved-line form inspired by the roofline of the car, which evokes the look of a Japanese sword. Such elements from the body of the car are expressed in multiple aspects of the watch design.

The ECB-2000NIS is equipped with Mobile Link features for pairing with a smartphone via Bluetooth®, providing automatic time correction and enabling easy setting of world time and other functions. Use with the dedicated CASIO WATCHES app to transfer stopwatch data measured on the watch, enabling display of lap times down to 1/1000 second. Enjoy practical utility, as well, with the Tough Solar charging system, which effectively converts light from fluorescent lamps and other sources to power the watch.

Carefree empowers women to take charge of their intimate care

pastedGraphic.png

If there is one lesson that Filipinos took away from the extended lockdown, it is the importance of maintaining our general health. During the peak of the pandemic, many of us experienced sudden changes in our routines. It was also during this time that we realized the importance of prioritizing physical health and self-care. For Filipinas, one form of self-care that has become more popular and important is intimate care or taking good care of their vaginal health.

With the increase in mobility and return of social activities, how can Filipinas take proper intimate care and practice good vaginal health – dealing with daily discharge, wetness, and odor management – while they are out and about?

According to Dr. Mary Ann Ceferina Gonzaga, an OBGYN practitioner, vaginal health can be managed by taking care of your overall health. This means eating healthy, having regular exercise, ensuring that you are well hydrated, sleeping well, and avoiding stressful activities. “Vaginal health is an important part of a woman’s overall health. It is important to maintain a healthy vulva and vagina to help prevent infections, discomfort, and to prevent the stress that comes with relationship problems and one’s self-confidence. If your vagina and intimate areas are healthy, you are more comfortable and confident which can equate to a better quality of life for women, their partners, and their families.” She also added how women can properly take care of their vaginal health, “Proper hygiene by keeping the intimate area clean, fresh, and dry is key in taking care of your vagina. We recommend using water and a natural mild soap or wash for cleaning, and using a natural, thin, light, comfortable, cotton, hypoallergenic pantyliners to keep women dry the whole day.”

Carefree, the number one pantyliner brand in the Philippines, believes that it is high time for women to start taking charge of their vaginal health now as they go out more. Through an online campaign called the #CarefreePantyLove Movement, Carefree aims to spark conversations in helping women keep their intimate area fresh all day, one clean panty at a time with Carefree pantyliners.

Carefree also tapped a new brand ambassador, Rei Germar, who embodies what it means to be Carefree fresh and clean. Rei shares how she practices #CarefreePantyLove by demonstrating to her followers how to keep her panties clean and fresh from wetness and odor by using Carefree pantyliners.

“I am a big believer of self-care and one of the ways I take care of myself is by making sure that even my most intimate areas are properly taken cared of. Now that I am going out more because of work and personal activities, I don’t want that icky feeling of vaginal discharge and having to worry about odor get in my way. With Carefree, I get to show #CarefreePantyLove by keeping my panties fresh and clean!” Rei Germar, content creator and Carefree ambassador.

“Now that women are starting to go out more, Carefree wants to empower every woman to take charge of their intimate care. With Carefree Breathable pantyliner, we want women to keep their panties feeling fresh all day, so they do not have to worry about wetness and odor when they do their daily activities,” Jason Khu, senior brand manager for Carefree.

Carefree has a wide portfolio of pantyliners that is customized for every woman’s need.

pastedGraphic_1.png

Carefree Breathable provides better air circulation to maintain that fresh panty feel all day. It is 3x more breathable (vs Carefree Super Dry) allowing air to circulate so your skin can breathe. It is cotton soft that provides superior comfort on skin.

Carefree Super Dry keeps you feeling fresh and dry from heavy daily discharge. It has moisture proof backing technology to prevent leakage and keep you dry and odor-free all day. Carefree Super Dry is designed with body shape contour for a close and comfortable fit. It is also made with cottony soft cover for maximum freshness. To add, Carefree Super Dry contains natural plant extract to help neutralize any odor causing bacteria.

Carefree Healthy Fresh gives you up to 8-hour odor and germ control with natural tea tree extract to control the growth of odor causing bacteria.

Instead, post-workout sessions at Awaken will leave you satisfied, energized and ready to take on the challenges of the day.

“Our workouts are challenging but not overwhelming which makes it very sustainable,” explained Coach Culver. “Pain is a sign that your muscles are either not used to the workout or it exceeded its capacity. By working with our highly trained professionals here at Awaken, we will start with an assessment so we curate the routine according to your body’s needs and current capacity, with just enough intensity that would still allow you to function normally as you go about your daily lives.”

This mindset and practice towards working out is what makes the fitness lifestyle sustainable, he added. And it does not start and stop with physical exercises. Awaken Gym prides itself in the holistic development of its members, making sure eating and sleeping habits are reformed, if not improved altogether.

“Rest and recovery are just as important as working out. Exercise creates microscopic tears in your muscle tissue. But during rest, cells called fibroblasts repair it. These help the tissue heal and grow, resulting in stronger muscles,” said Coach Culver. Awaken is one of the few, if not the only, gyms offering red light therapy—part of its NSDR method or the practice of Non-Sleep Deep Rest, he explained. It puts the body into a deep relaxation state to allow it to reset and go back to recovery mode after triggering the fight-or-flight response during the workout, Coach Culver added.

Home away from home

The F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, a perennial title contender in the pro volleyball scene, are proud to call the Awaken Gym their second home. Sonny Montalvo, who doubles as the team and the gym’s strength and conditioning coach, leads the weekly training of the athletes to ensure that they are in their best form to compete.

“While Awaken serves as a home to those looking to improve their fitness lifestyle, this gym is also a home to elite athletes who wish to train for high-level competitions,” Coach Sonny said. “Since F2 Logistics started training here at Awaken, the team got back to the podium.”

“Thank you Awaken for being our second home and providing us a conducive space to better ourselves,” said Cha Cruz, outside hitter for F2 Logistics. “I’m in the best shape of my life so far and I’m looking forward to getting stronger and better. The people at Awaken are so welcoming and helpful, and I’m very grateful that they do everything they can to support my team and myself,” setter Iris Tolenada added.

Something for everyone

Effectivity and variety are the bread and butter of Awaken Gym. Coach Culver has made it a point for himself and the other coaches to continuously study the latest developments in physical fitness, training, and the like, and apply those in their gym. Paraphrasing Bruce Lee, Coach Culver said of this practice, “Research, absorb what is useful, discard what is unnecessary, and add what works for you.”

One of the most effective routines for the gym’s members is the Functional Training Fundamentals (FTF). “You might just be carrying grocery bags up the stairs and afterwards you’re already gasping for breath. That’s what FTF works on: the muscles you use and the movements you do everyday to improve overall health and lifestyle. These are workouts that actually make sense, and by being consistent with it you also get a bonus of above average physique,” Coach Culver said.

Coach Sonny added that variety is important for non-athletes looking to get fit. Without variety, people would tend to get bored doing the same things over and over. By applying new learnings and strategies, as well as getting the latest certifications, the coaches of Awaken Gym have expanded their offerings to include the following, aside from Strength and Conditioning and FTF:

  • Animal Flow workout—ground-based movement designed to improve strength, flexibility, mobility, and coordination;
  • Calisthenics; Athletic Performance; Biomechanics Training;
  • High Intensity Interval Training; Circuit training; Spartan training;
  • Therapy, including but not limited to: sports taping, dry needling, physical therapy, myofascial release, and the like;
  • Kids workout; Corporate team building;
  • And others, like meal prep, merchandise, as well as a meeting and small event venue.

Hendrick Young, who has been a member of Awaken for the past year, testified to the holistic development that the gym works towards. “One of the greatest things I learned from Awaken is that working out is a lifestyle, not just an activity we do a few times a week. Awaken also helped me to see that nurturing and developing mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness.”

He added, “When I joined Awaken, I expected to become a member of a gym but I ended up being a part of one big family.”

Dr. Jeffrey Ang, who also started on his fitness journey nearly a year ago, attested to the welcoming atmosphere that Awaken exudes. He shared, “What drew me in is the heart and soul of Awaken—the coaches and staff. I have always had a hard time every time I do trials in a gym. I am fortunate enough to have the privilege to train with one of the best coaches in the country, Culver. He was able to push me and my boundaries to the limit, like I was able to go outside of the box, learn and develop myself without compromising each other’s individuality.”

Dr. Ang added, “The community is one of the factors that really sold it for me. From the staff to the different clients that I met, I never felt like I was someone less. The people all understood that we are in this together—a collective of people helping and pushing each other for the betterment of each individual.”
