Multi-sectoral group comes together to help entrepreneurs weather pandemic-caused recession

Public encouraged to ‘buy local’ to support small biz owners

The considerable resources of the Association of the Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Go Negosyo, SM Foundation, Security Bank, and Union Bank are being brought to bear in efforts to jumpstart a languid economy stalled by the effects of the three-month long coronavirus lockdown.

The multi-sectoral group is raising awareness on the plight of millions of Micro Enterprises and Small and Mid-Sized Enterprises – collectively, the MSMEs – in the hopes of coaxing the buying public into increased patronage.

The group has thrown together a campaign called BUYANIHAN; a creative juxtaposition of the word buy and the local idiom bayanihan, referring to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation, as an economic lifeline.

Though deadly and extensive, the pandemic is not isolated on the health-front.

When the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) was invoked throughout Luzon, establishments providing basic necessities and services were deemed essential and were allowed to remain open, albeit on a skeleton force.

Much of those belonging to the MSMEs, however, were not listed. They were hit hardest due to the closure of malls and retail establishments. As were micro enterprises like barbershops and salons, massage parlors and spas, and the neighborhood street peddlers.

“These businesses have lost a significant amount of income due to the challenges of the ECQ,” said DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, explaining BUYANIHAN’s rationale. “We need to ensure their survival.”

DTI revealed that of the 1.42 million registered businesses, an overwhelming 99.6% belong to MSMEs, with the majority, 88.5%, classified as micro enterprises.

They generate 63.19% of the country’s total employment figures.

“MSMEs are the backbone of our economy. This virus has brought a devastating blow to the physical and financial health of our nation. And we must work together to save both,” continued Lopez.

Prior to the ECQ, economists projected rosy targets of 6.5% to 7.5% GDP growth for the Philippines this year.

On March 19, around when the lockdown commenced, those numbers were lowered to a pragmatic 4.3% to a dismal minus (-)3.9%.

Pessimism is reasonable, in light of the wholesale impact on declining transport, tourism, exports, remittances, and reduced consumption; historically, the main driver of the Philippine economy.

Even Facebook last May said that one in three small businesses that have shut down don’t expect to reopen again.

When you consider that most MSMEs are located at the National Capital Region, Region IVA (CALABARZON), and Region III (Central Luzon) – regions in the main island from which 73% of the country’s GDP comes from and where the lockdown was rigorously enforced – then the true weight of the ECQ becomes clear.

This is because MSMEs rely on cash flow for daily operations: salaries to be paid, employee benefits to be fulfilled, rent, loans, supplier accountabilities, and credit card bills are still due. Although the quarantine levels have now lightened, during the ECQ they have had zero cash flow.

Perhaps more than any entity aware of the hit that MSMEs are experiencing is the SM Group, the Philippines’ largest mall operator and consequently it’s biggest retail space lessor.

Its SM Foundation has been generous in providing funds, medical supplies, and protective equipment. Its SM Supermalls have waived rentals from March 16 to April 14.

“We share our tenant-partners’ concerns at the unfortunate situation and will waive rental charges for those affected and unable to operate during this period,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “This support forms part of our commitment to fight the effects of the outbreak.”

That alone benefits 19,153 SM mall tenants nationwide whose doors are now slowly but surely reopening for business.

Security Bank, one of the country’s leading universal banks and cited by Asiamoney as the “Best Bank for SMEs” in 2017 and 2019, eased its process for facilitating business loans for MSMEs in need of liquidity and lowered percentage in its Ecommerce payment gateway.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world unprecedented disruption, but with each of us doing our part, we will overcome this challenge and get better,” said Security Bank President and CEO Sanjiv Vohra.

Meanwhile, Union Bank, ranked by the BankQuality Consumer Survey on Retail Banks as

the second most helpful bank in Asia-Pacific during the coronavirus crisis – the only Philippine bank in the top 20 list – eased up account openings by shifting it online and providing checking accounts with affordable depository requirements, enabling MSMEs to further legitimize their businesses.

So there is hope.

Easing of quarantine restrictions is a good first step. Provided the population behaves in ways that stem the infectious tide, then the wheels of commerce can start turning again.

And as these economic engines came to a screeching halt, it will take no more than a concerted effort to jolt it back from inertia. A bayanihan movement, if you will.

Or, a BUYANIHAN.

“MSMEs took a direct hit, incurred big losses,” said AFFI President Jorge Noel Wieneke. “It’s back to zero for many, or back to the starting line. They are now in the ‘ICU’ and they need a blood transfusion. We can fix this with a BUYANIHAN spirit.”

It is a simple, doable solution. Consumers just need to start consuming again. Start buying again.

But for now, buy local to support our MSMEs.

25 Wisdoms (25 Things I learned at 25)

So I just turned 26 this year, I’m so old k? haha. It’s really been an eye opening year for me and the pressure really hit me this time. Anyways that would be another blogpost, I’m still winging it haha and I can’t wait what will happen to me this year.

I am sharing to you, 25 Wisdoms (25 Things I learned at 25). I was suppose to do this on my birthday last June 17 but I was really really busy. Anyways it’s been a month already and I still say that I am 25 whenever people ask me my age. It still hasn’t sinked in yet haha.

Before I share my 25 wisdoms, these are all based on my personal experiences and I am no pro or the best person. All random haha, but I would like to ask a favor to respect my private life. I won’t go into deeper details and no further questions, please. A girl doesn’t kiss and tell.

Anyways 🙂

  1.  “Huwag  ka maghanap ng kulang sa life mo and huwag ma inggit sa ibang tao”.  In English: Be content and don’t be jealous of other people.  Just wait, be patient, work hard and trust in God’s timing.
  2. “Love lang and don’t expect anything para hindi ka masaktan”. In English: Just love and don’t expect anything in return, so you won’t get hurt.
  3.  “I really believe that whatever is for me, will never pass me”. -Shaina Magdayao. Yes, let it happen organically and don’t force it. Here is a vlog from Bianca Gonzales’ Paano Ba To with Shaina Magdayao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw1J_pPIjqw

    screen grab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw1J_pPIjqw
  4. Trust your gut and instinct. This one took years to develop and lately when I meet new people it’s not that I don’t like them, it’s that I don’t like their energy and vibe.
  5. Your public and private personality should be the same. Be authentic “magpaka totoo ka”. Yet still keep your private life, private. Not all things have to be posted on social media. Why? I don’t wan’t to jinx it. Remember, Love is quiet, Infatuation is loud.
  6.  Love yourself and your BODY,  As cliche’ as it sounds-  it’s true. You don’t base your happiness from other people, it should start with yourself.  Do what makes you happy. That’s why I have ME TIME and I remove things or unfiend/ avoid people who are toxic.  #SelfCare #MeTime                                                                                                                                                        I am a body positive advocate, last year  my motto was YOLO so I ate whatever I want that’s why I gained a lot of weight and didn’t go to the gym that often. This year, before turning 26, I had health issues and I noticed how my body is changing. That’s why I had to modify my lifestyle. I wouldn’t lose weight if it wasn’t my health on the line and I want to feel good about myself. Plus it’s also part of my job to be photographed all the time, I want to look good atleast. #WhenAgingHitsYou
  7. Believe in the Law of Attraction and do meditation(Incense Sticks).
    https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/580119995722186758/

Start of first with your body (#6) by eating good & healthy food (plus workout). Once you feel good in the inside and the rest will follow and attract.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          This year, I started using incense sticks when I meditate(atleast once a week). Benefits of Incense sticks:https://www.vectiskarma.co.uk/Benefits-of-Burning-Incense

  8. Travel more! I grew up travelling and I believe it  hones character, cultural awareness and  being more open. Try travelling alone too, it is really liberating. Travel as much when you’re single especially. I like to do this before I get married because once you settle down everything and priorities changes. While you are still young and you have the energy, what’s the rush!
  9. When it comes to friendship, for me HONESTY is the most important aspect more than loyalty. This was based on a personal experience.
  10. Say sorry once, twice is okay but Three times is abusive. I heard this from a taxi driver and he had a point.
  11. Dating: Start as FRIENDS. The best foundation.                                                                                                                                                     Let me insert, if the guy is not single, MOVE ON.
  12. Relationships : Never make your partner, choose. You compromise and work things out maturely. If you two are meant to be together, you’ll end up together, let destiny do it’s job – According to my Mom.
  13. Know your LOVE LANGUAGE (also your partner, for future reference).  link:https://www.5lovelanguages.com/
  14. You will not always be motivated so you must learn to be DISCIPLINE.           I realized recently that I lacked action and I am working on it.
  15. Before I turned 26, I realized as you get older your circle of friends become smaller.  I was browsing on my old photos during my previous birthdays and I noticed the number of invites compared this year. Remember, other people have their own lives and just be happy for them. Anyways time to move on, make more new friends and just having 1 solid friend is enough. That’s part of growing up.
  16. Find a workout that you enjoy and you make time for it. For me I enjoy cycling and recently pound. It’s more of a personality thing. Try to switch up your workout too time to time so you won’t get bored and your body might get used to it. If you are trying to lose weight, 70% Diet (Kain talaga!) and 30% exercise, BIBLE! (Keeping Up with the Kardashian reference.)
  17.  I am at an age, this applies to some situations “Bahala ka kung saan ka masaya” or “Hayaan mo sila”.  In english: “It’s up to you for as long you are happy” or “Just mind your own business.” I get asked too about bashers, I just don’t mind them anymore.Just let KARMA do it’s job.
  18. When I show skin on social media, I choose an appropriate platform which is more on instagram but it should be in a classy way. NOT just too much, “hindi yung pabigay or seeking attention”. Like I show some skin because I am in the beach or fruit of my labor because I work really hard in the gym – that is okay.  There is appropriation and RESPECT for yourself.                                                                                                                                                              I realized, that in the future when I have kids or when I get married what would they think of me. My future daughter might say, “You did that when you were my age, mom”. There would be consequences. (“May balik yan”).
  19. Love is NOT blind, your judgment is just clouded.
  20. When you notice that someone treats you differently or there is a sudden change in how they treat you, just understand, people go through a something in their personal life.
  21. When a guy says he is busy, believe him. What attracts him more towards you is that if he sees that you have a life, if he sees this world that you can offer, he would want to be part of it. Men are natural hunters.  – Matthew Hussey
  22. Don’t take things too personally.
  23. Take things ONE thing at a time. People always say, I have a lot of things going on in my life #multihyphenate. They think I have good time management haha seriously NOT AT ALL haha, I just wing it. I just like living in the moment and being spontaneous. Sometimes when you plan it doesn’t happen haha.
  24.  When Sh%tty things happen in your life, Just accept things and say what is this teaching me? Sometimes, I don’t want to be too happy because something bad may happen in return (“pag masayado ka masaya may kapalit) Tip: This is a traditional thing, when you are so happy or laughing hard, “magpunit ng papel” or cut/shred paper into smaller pieces). Just be calm and be neutral always. Learn also to forgive yourself, you are not perfect.
  25. GOD FIRST always.

Do It Your Mood With Wacoal

I have been introduced to wacoal  by my mom back in college. Back then I couldn’t afford one because I was a student and my mom would buy for me. It was costly but it was so comfortable to wear – I swear. When I got older, I realized investing on your intimates is important. Usual bras from wacoal would cost starting P1000 + but it is worth the investment.

November 16 – 18 was the launch of wacoal’s autumn/winter collection at UP Town’s activity center (near coffee bean). Fun filled activities like photobooth and boomerang booths. Attendees were also able to attend talks prepared by influencers such as Content creator/Entrepreneur, Rhea Bue (11 am) shared her travel hacks, Fashion/Lifestyle/Travel blogger, Char Deocareza talks about “Your go-to outfit” she shares that writes down and plan her outfits prior to her travels (1 pm) and Beauty/Travel B/Vlogger, Rei germar  teaches how to match outfits with your mood (3pm).

if you guys have the time to check out Wacoal’s mood store and you’re by Katipunan area visit their boutique at UP Town Katipunan (3rd floor near coco tea and across underarmour). Thinking of what bra to get I would suggest the Travel Bra, Bandeau bra and sports bras. Actually all bras are very comfortable it’s just whatever matches your preference.

For the wanderlust, the travel bra is so easy to pack just spread-roll and fold. It is not spacious to pack and gets back to its perfect form. The bandeau bra can be strapless and the wire part that supports the breast underneath is very comfy, it’s not that annoying thick wire feeling you get. Their sports bra are very versatile in style and it can match any athleisure look. The lace bras looks so nice and they have other basic bras with unique lace details that make it so cute to wear. Lastly, don’t forget to check their other autumn/winter collection.

Palmolive Expertique Hair Care Line

Palmolive Expertique hair care line brings you salon-beautiful hair everyday. With this line of hair products you can be your own hair expert at your very own home. The struggle is real in maintaining that salon-beautiful hair days after but don’t worry Palmolive Expertique got you covered.

This line comes with shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, anti frizz serum and beautifying oil. What makes this line special that it is infused with Kera-Ceramide Serum.  Hair technology that makes hair nourished and stronger inside and out. Keratin gives the hair strength leaving it smooth and manageable. The Ceramide on the other hand prevents damage and restores shine. You don’t have to spend too much on expensive hair care products and it would be available in all leading supermarkets nationwide near you.

Also that introducing their latest ambassador, the first Filipina to win Asia’s next top model, Maureen Wroblewitz.

“Just like the majority of women out there, I too desire to have salon-beautiful hair everyday, and not just when I’m coming from a shoot or a runway show. With Palmolive EXPERTIQUETM, I am my own hair expert. I am able to take charge of not only my beauty, but my everyday too. With Palmolive EXPERTIQUETM, I can OWN IT.” – Maureen Wroblewitz

The shampoo and conditioner comes in 3 variants: REVITALISTE, SMOOTHIQUE and RESILIENTE. Available in bottles 170 ml (P130.00) and in sachets 12 ml (P6.00).

REVITALISTE is for NORMAL to DRY HAIR, contains Kera-Ceramide with biotin and hyaluronic. It penetrataes and deeply nourishes hair fibers, enhancing hair’s vitality and natural movement.

SMOOTHIQUE (This is Maureen’s personal favorite) this is for FRIZZY HAIR, contains kera-ceramide serum with rare oil complex. It aligns, tames and adds control to frzzy and flyaway hair.

RESILIENTE for DAMAGED HAIR, contains Kera- Ceramide with arginine. It reconstructs and fortifies damaged, over – treated hair.

Impressions: Affordable ofcourse!, It still has that signature Palmolive scent with a kick but fresher scent which leaves your hair really smelling good. Your hair feels light right after and a cool feeling on the scalp. I use a wet brush in combing my hair and I noticed less hair falling off and it’s super smooth with NO tangles at all.

For the hair treatments, you got the INTENSIVE HAIR MASK 180 ml (P195.00), BEAUTIFYING OIL 30 ml (P195.00) AND ANTI-FRIZZ SERUM 70 ml (P250.00).

Impressions: The Intensive hair mask is used after conditioner, I personally use hair mask atleast once or twice in a week, I leave it on for a few minutes especially when I go to the steam room and sauna. For Palmolive Expertique Intensive Hair mask, according to the label you can leave on for 2- 5 minutes then wash it off. For me after washing, this hair mask definitely gives you that cool feeling on the scalp and your hair is so smooth right after. Your hair feels light if that’s what you’re going for.

The anti -frizz serum, comes in a spray bottle and I since I don’t have frizzy hair, I just hit the ends of my hair then distribute evenly since it prevents fly away hair. This is applied on towel-dried hair.

For the beautifying oil, 1-2 pumps is enough rub it first, apply to your roots and massage till the end of the hair. Don’t apply too much. and its better to apply it if you took a bath then your hair let it dry(t towel dried hair) then apply the oil. I wouldn’t suggest if you haven’t taken a shower, it makes the hair really oily,

This Rainy Season, Start Fresh with Seattle’s Best Coffee

A great take on coffee + art together can turn out to be great and fun! Who doesn’t love coffee and art.

Anina Rubio creates stellar art pieces, you can see her work around BGC. Her style is modern and fresh just like SBC. She demonstrated her latest art project which is the  highlight of SBC Highstreet’s glass window.  Giving it a fresh take  and her personal touch because she loves her coffee in the morning.

“I’m very much inspired by nature. You can see it in 98 percent of my artworks. This mural is very personal because I start my day with a shot of espresso or an Iced Americano, and I also have a backyard full of plants, which is a similar setting to what you have here at SBC BGC,” – Anina Rubio

Along with that the series of workshops lined up – The SBC Perkspective, a series of quarterly pocket events that will offer talks, workshops, and informal meet-ups aimed at giving a fresh perspective on how we create and view art, music, photography and other creative processes.

Inspired by Anina’s  work, the handy SBC tumblers were so fun to decorate and personalize according to your personality. I had a small contribution on the mural just the details on the leaves, I think mine looked like chicken feet hehehe

SBC is known for serving FRESH anytime! I personally know this because while I was reviewing for my board exam way back at  SBC – Tomas Morato, there were open till 4am (on selected days) so when I fell to pull an all nighter SBC was my go to- fresh meals, drinks and coffee. Till now my SBC meals and coffee never fails to be always fresh.

I am #Curvalicious with Whisper

Usually when that time of the month comes, Hormones can go crazy but that comes being organically human.

Being that girl with a crazy schedule, active lifestyle and love spontaneous trips! I dare to #ChooseCurvalicious with @whisperphilippines Cottony soft protection up to 12 hours leakage protection – Nothing holding us back girls and we can do whatever we want!

So the cottony soft protection got an upgrade from blue to its new pink look. So I’ve tried the regular 23 cm pad (comes with 8 pads in a pack) with wings, It was comfy. Like it says, snuggly fit – you know sometimes when you place a napkin it goes eitherways. Whisper cottony soft protection has that Stick n’ secure feature and has anti leak barriers. I usually use heavy flow pads epsecially the first 2 days of my period (STRONG TIMES). When I got my whisper pack, luckily it was my 4th day so It’s perfectly fine for me to use a regular pad especially during the day. It’s “CURVALICIOUS DESIGN” fits sunggly to prevent leaks and helps soothe skin because made of Dermcare™ lotion.

Whisper did still stick to the floral aesthetic design (wrap and strip) and the pad itself still got the basic look. I couldn’t recall the previous design because I used the other kind (whisper clean and dry).

In all fairness upon using it for 12 hrs, It didn’t feel lumpy- you know girls what I mean. Lastly, another important thing I did not experience any skin reactions because that’s what I consider most  a GOOD pad.

Here is what you can do to Help BDJ’s The Pahina Project

As an blogger or so called “influencer” (Honestly, I don’t deserve to be part of the spectrum because I personally feel that I still have a long way to go), I’ve come to realize that sometimes having this title can also help raise awareness to your  passion project.
